Up to 31% of new hires quit within the first six months on the job. Its quite possible that at some point, youll be relatively new in a job and wondering if and when its okay to vamoose. If you find yourself in this situation, you may find that the best thing to do is to give notice and move on. But before you rush to do that, consider some strategies for when maybe thats not the best, or the most financially viable, option. 1. Figure Out Whats Not Working (and What Is)When people tell me they hate their new job, I first want to know what, specifically, they hate about it. After all, when you start any new job, you tend to feel clumsy and ungainly, simply because everythings new. Youre used to feeling competent, and now you dont. This sense of discomfort might feel like failure or frustration- and that might be the source of your thoughts of quitting. On the other hand, it could also be that the work wasnt what was promised, your manager is useless, or the culture totally sucks. Those are things that may not get better over time. Then, look at what is working. Maybe youre working for a great company with potential for advancement. There might be great mentors and experienced professionals on your team to learn from. After you assess whats working and whats not, consider if the long-term gain is worth slogging through these difficult early months. Then, youll be able to think about your next steps and options much more clearly. 2. Have The Talk With Your ManagerIts no secret Its a big fat hassle for organizations to recruit and hire employees, only to lose them in a few short weeks. That means, as a new hire, you have leverage. Use it After all, the organization hired you because the people there believe you can help it succeed. The employer is probably going to be very disappointed if you leave. My client, Vivian, for example, landed the job of her dreams at a nonprofit. The week after she started, her babo went on vacation and left her with a big list of to-dos, vague instructions, and good wishes. By the time her boss returned, she was overwhelmed, unnerved, and ready to quit, thinking she had made a very big mistake and was going to be awful at the job. But Vivian decided to try a different approach. Though her first instinct was to gloss over the situation when her boss returned, she met with her manager to explain what happened and how it made her feel. She shared her desire to do well, but reported feeling lost and unsupported in the early weeks. Her boss listened and apologized. She arranged for Vivian to receive training and coaching on the companys software and other processes. She thanked her for being brave and forthcoming about her experience so they could remedy it together. Contrary to her first days on the job, Vivian moved forward feeling welcomed, valued, and supported. Resignati on averted Its not always easy to say, I need help- especially in a new job where you want to be seen as a competent high performer. But by asking for what you need, you may be able to change the path of this new job.3. Give Yourself a Time FrameOK, so youve started the new job and its less than ideal. But remember, jobs- and the success that comes with them- are an acquired taste that require time, practice, and learning. Most new employees leave jobs because they dont feel confident in getting the work done or getting to know the boss and colleagues. So, give yourself time to do both. Create a timeline that youll use to make a go or stay decision- and during that time, commit to learning the job and the work processes. Get a mentor. Meet weekly with your manager. Build relationships with the colleagues and teams around you. Do everything you can in your control to make the job the best experience possible. If, at the end of your time frame, nothings better and you dont believe you re moving forward, consider putting your termination plan into place. 4. If All Else Fails, Quit and Ask for Your Old Job BackRecently, another one of my clients, Emma, called with great news a job offer at a big personenname company in New York. More money, better title. And did I mention the well-known, super recognizable name you would kill to have on your resume? But a few weeks later I got another call. How long do I have to stay here before I can quit, without looking like a job hopper?Yep. The grass isnt always greener. It turns out that big brand name was filled with 50-something white men and social outings that felt more like funerals than fiestas. Though she loved the work, 20-something Emma hated the environment. No one left before the boss, and the boss didnt leave until nearly 8 PM each evening. She called her former employer and asked if she could return. Though her specific job wasnt available, her old boss referred her to another department where she is now happily employed. (Thats why it helps to leave on good terms and keep your relationships current)Taking a job and wanting to quit immediately is a story I hear far too frequently. It reinforces how critical due diligence is in the job search. I should have asked more, better questions before I took that job, is a common observation.If you leave, remember that your next job search is a two-way street. Sure, that company is looking for talent. But you need to look for the place thats right for you.

But before any potential employer has the chance to see you shine in person, you’ve got to wow them with words on a page. The wrong words on your resume will make you forgettable, but the right words can bring you to the top of the pile of resumes. Showcasing your true talents and relevant experience on your resume can be a challenge. It’s hard to know what to say and how to say it. Though it may be tempting, loading your resume with meaningless or irrelevant buzzwords could detract from your true accomplishments. That’s why we’ve rounded up some words that can kill your resume - and your shot at landing your dream job. Be Specific, Not Generic Generic descriptors like “people person” are overused, so recruiters are likely to skim right past them. Additionally, these types of cliche phrases are impossible to prove - you could consider yourself “highly qualified” or a “team player” (two phrases that should be avoided), but your potential employer will be looking for specific evidence to support these claims. In other words, show, don’t tell. Find ways to quantify your accomplishments or describe responsibilities that have more solid proof. Rambling off your list of daily to-dos, essentially regurgitating your job description, won’t help you as much as showing how you’ve gone above and beyond. For example, “Utilized innovative social media marketing techniques to increase sales by 12%” will have a much greater impact than, “Utilized social media marketing techniques.” Quantifying will show your potential employer exactly what you can bring to the table and how you’ll be a key player on their team. Other overly common resume buzzwords that detract from your quality resume (and should therefore be avoided) include: Results-driven Best of breed Extensive experience Seasoned Hard-working Ambitious Proven or demonstrated ability Accomplishments Over Duties Phrases like “responsible for” and “duties included” are less-than-impressive details. Job duties were given to you - they’re not achievements. Your resume should tell the stories of your accomplishments, not just your day-to-day responsibilities. Additionally, these superfluous lead-ins clutter the page and hide your relevant experience. Get to the point, and use strong active verbs to describe your achievements. No Personal Pronouns The recruiter reviewing your resume knows you’re speaking about yourself, so personal pronouns like “I,” “me,” “my,” “we” or “our” detract from your point. For example, instead of saying “I was responsible for training our interns to meet our sales objectives,” write “Trained interns to meet and exceed sales objectives.” Bonus points if you can add some specific numbers or stats to prove your success in a concrete way. Exchange Objective for Experience Instead of telling recruiters about what you want, use the space at the top to showcase your experience. Make sure it is relevant to the role you are interested in, and include relevant keywords that will help you rank higher in applicant tracking systems. Does the job require experience with a content calendar or content management system? Maybe the ideal candidate is described as having impressive sales numbers or management and training skills. Whatever the listed requirements, make sure you highlight how your experience directly applies to the job ad, rather than wasting time with an objective. What To Do If You're Caught Interviewing at the Competition What To Do If You're Caught Interviewing at the Competition It’s every currently-employed job seeker’s worst nightmare - getting caught red-handed seeking a job at a competitor. Try as you might to keep it on the down low , it can be difficult to avoid suspicion. “When I was an in-house HR Manager, I could always tell when someone, especially of a manager level or higher, was interviewing or considering leaving the company. ‘Doctors and dentist appointments’ occur more frequently, a long lunch or two takes a few hours, or the need to arrive late or leave early begins to pop up,” says Christy Hopkins, Human Resources Consultant and Staff Writer at Fit Small Business . Or maybe it’s simply in your demeanor. “I could also tell in [employees’] work though,” Hopkins adds. “Employees who were normally passionate and engaged seemed quiet in meetings and lackluster in their work . Whenever I noticed the signs, I always pointed it out to their manager and left it up to them to bring it up or not. 9 times out of 10, I was right.” But don’t worry - even though being caught might feel like the end of the world, it really isn’t. Hopkins shared a handful of steps that job seekers can take to mitigate the damage of being outed as an active job seeker.  Here’s what you should do if you’re caught interviewing at the competition: Sure, it seems bad now. But oftentimes, we get more worked up in stress-inducing situations than we need to - the reactions and consequences we imagine are often much worse in our heads than what actually end up occurring. “From an HR standpoint, I never wanted someone to get in trouble,” Hopkins says. “The reason for pointing it out was to decide if hours on my side called for looking for candidates to potentially replace the person and preparing a job posting.” So take some time to decompress - go for a walk, head home a little bit early to collect yourself, or even try to do some breathing exercises or meditation techniques. Above all, stay calm and know that this isn’t the end. Don’t feel like getting caught means you have to immediately bolt, Hopkins says. But it does mean that you should address it in some way - otherwise, it’ll be an uncomfortable elephant in the room for all parties involved. Ask to chat with your manager or HR to acknowledge why you’re seeking other opportunities. Are you unhappy with your current pay ? Do you want to eembark on a different career path ? Do you feel like you just need a change of pace? Depending on your circumstance, your current employer may be willing to accommodate certain requests if it means you staying. “[It] might sound a bit crazy, [but] your openness and honesty will be appreciated and could even lead to a raise or promotion if that is why you are thinking of leaving,” Hopkins shares. On the other hand, if you’re determined to move onto bigger and better things, don’t be afraid to let your employer know that. You can still come up with a plan together that’s mutually beneficial - they get a smoother transition between employees, and you get to leave on good terms (something that’s critical in securing future references ). “Perhaps you could create an exit strategy of 30, 60, or 90 days and leave without burning a bridge. Or you could help recruit your replacement and stay until your new job is lined up. I’ve seen many situations where then a monetary incentive is added onto the exit plan for the person to stay the full time,” Hopkins says. Unfortunately, though, you can’t always guarantee that an employer will take the news of your departure with grace - especially if you’ll be working with their direct competitor. If an environment becomes hostile , don’t feel pressured to stay longer than necessary. Your well-being should come first. “I saw this once when I was working at a marketing firm as their HR Manager. The management team there was 6 people and they had learned one of their superstar account executives was interviewing with a competitor by hearing it through the grapevine. While they did not take action, they did hold [it] against this person and created a very hostile work environment . I felt that they would have been better off parting ways with the employee than the solution they came up with,” Hopkins shares. Finding yourself out of work before you’re ready is certainly less than ideal, but there are ways you can reduce the financial strain. Consider picking up a side gig , working with a staffing agency , or negotiating a severance package  as a starting point. If you decide to take a job at the competition, be careful - you may have insider knowledge of sensitive information and, depending on what you originally agreed to in the offer letter with your former company, you may not be allowed to divulge it. Review your original offer letter to see what their policy is on non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements - it may state that you have to keep certain proprietary information (such as financial reports, communications, product design, etc.) private at the risk of facing legal action if it’s violated. Starting a job is stressful enough. The last thing you need is concerns about a lawsuit hanging over your head, so read carefully! Once you’re finally through the thick of it, you can use your experience as a learning moment so that it doesn’t happen again. One of the best ways to ensure this, Hopkins says, is to leverage your vacation time . “To the active job seekers who still currently have a job, remember to use your PTO leave for interviews as best as possible to avoid raising flags,” she says. Beyond helping you keep your job search in stealth mode, it’s also the courteous thing to do for your colleagues. “When someone continually leaves early, arrives late, etc. because they are interviewing, they are usually stressing out their teammates and their manager. If you at least try to use PTO and plan accordingly, you won’t stress out the people that you probably are friends with and care about,” she concludes.

Recruiters use this vague, neutral language pretty often and it’s something you can almost never avoid. So, what can these words signal to you and how should you react to them? Let’s have a look. What does well get back to you even mean? The ambiguous answer does not mean either that ‘You are rejected’ or ‘You are selected’. Many of us get confused because it is infused with so many potential meanings that it just makes your head spin. More so if all the body language you can read is a hiring manager’s poker face. Let’s try to decode what these guys may have in their minds while talking to you: There are some other candidates we need to consider. If they are not as qualified or as experienced as you then we will get back to you. I don’t have the answer right now. I need to talk to someone before giving you the answer. Only then will I get back to you. Unfortunately, you’re not quite eligible for this position. Still, I won’t say anything right now because it’s not good manners to say so. That’s why I need to use: I will get back to you. The first two of them give you some hope, which is great. So don’t worry, there’s no need to despair. This answer is not the end of your job prospects. On the contrary, it can as well be the next step towards getting you a job. Best practices It’s also good to have a an idea of how recruiting works. The hiring process in most of the companies is actually pretty complicated. All the communication between you and your potential employer is usually handled by the HR department. So its only reasonable if you expect to get a callback from the hiring manager. But what if you don’t?   1. Try to prevent the situation in the first place Before you leave the interview, ask about next steps and the decision timeline. Try to get an exact date or date range from the interviewer. Ask directly: “When can I expect to hear back about this position?” This will put your mind to rest by giving you an idea of when you can expect to hear something. It will also give you a timeframe for following up appropriately without getting too pushy. 2. Take initiative. If you’re waiting for a response, sometimes the best choice is to be bold. Considering you’ve sent a thank-you note some time ago, the next step is to call the HR department. Let them know about your continuing interest in the position and that you are eager to hear back. Without being too pushy, ask what the status of the position is. Be prepared to get no clear response as they may not be able to address this. However, they may be able to provide you with a progress update or ask for more information from you. It’s also a good idea to connect with employers at your prospective organisation via LinkedIn or other social networks to see if you can learn more through networking. 3. Show dedication Yes, it’s important to follow up and stay on the company’s radar. But discretion always comes first. Feel free to call for a status update, but be consistent with just one method of communication. Calling, emailing and mailing at the same time  - that can send the wrong message and put them off for good. If you want to use voicemail, leave a short, courteous message to keep things professional. You need to stay reasonable, though. If it’s been over a month since you’ve heard anything, there’s no point in beating a dead horse. The truth is that you have no control over the recruiting process and the entire situation is in someone else’s hands. But don’t let this cripple an otherwise successful job search. Take the time you need, shed your frustration and move on towards the next opportunity. It might be waiting around the corner! 3. Be patient Remember that the lukewarm response doesn’t always equal rejection. Accept the fact that some information can’t be shared right away. The company needs to fill the position but their timeline is often much looser than yours. You may be the winner, but they still need to wait to make an official offer due to the final approval or some bureaucratic jungle. In these cases, the best course of action is to wait it out for at least a week. Always keep pushing forward Waiting is a real beast. Your spirits are low and you have no clue what may be happening in the meantime.   You can even feel tempted to put your search on hold. But nothing could be worse. Dont let your demons run loose. Temp roles can serve as an opportunity to test out a new market or job role when the applicant may not have enough experience for a full-time position. Temporary work can also be a great way for unemployed individuals to make a positive impression upon an employer and consequently be hired for a more permanent job in the future. However, most unemployed workers are financially strapped and fear losing their unemployment benefits if they take on a temporary or contract position. How a Temporary Job How Impacts Unemployment Benefits What happens if you accept a temporary job while receiving unemployment benefits? States have vastly different policies on how temporary employment is handled, so you should contact your state unemployment office for a definitive answer on the impact on your benefits. Reduction or Elimination of Unemployment BenefitsIn general, your unemployment benefits will typically be reduced or eliminated during the period of your temporary work depending on the level of pay for your temp job. If you earn less than the amount of your unemployment benefits, you will usually still be entitled to the difference between your temp pay and the amount of your unemployment benefits. For example, if you earn $200 and are entitled to $400 in unemployment benefits, you will still receive $200 of unemployment compensation. However, if you earn $400 or more in that temp job, then your benefits would be suspended. When the temporary job ends, you should be able to either continue your existing unemployment claim or open a new claim depending on your eligibility. If your benefit period has expired, you will need to reapply for unemployment. Your benefits will generally be based on the preceding period of temporary work. State employment laws vary, so temporary employees may still qualify for unemployment benefits once the temp job has been completed.   Eligibility for Unemployment Benefits After Temporary Work Eligibility for unemployment benefits are based on several factors, such as the duration of the employment, the wages earned, and the reason for the unemployment and/or reduced hours. So long as you are unemployed due to no fault of your own (also known as termination for cause) and you are actively seeking work, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Job seekers must, however, accept any suitable employment, so turning down an opportunity can disqualify them from claiming benefits.   Similar to temp workers, seasonal workers are employed for short, specific times of the year due to weather-related or tourist-related industries. In Massachusetts, Colorado, ?and Pennsylvania, seasonal workers cannot apply for unemployment benefits unless they were laid off or made redundant during the extent of their working season.   Independent contractors cannot claim unemployment benefits like temp and full-time workers may. Independent contractors are considered self-employed, and therefore, are not employees. Only employees can claim unemployment benefits, a subtle but important difference between these different types of employment. Temporary Work and Total Unemployment Benefits The amount of compensation you can receive through unemployment benefits are calculated based on your wages during a 12-15 month period leading up to your first day of unemployment. This time frame is considered the “base period.” It is advantageous to maintain employment regularly during this period, as it lowers the total amount, which lessens your eligible compensation rate. Quitting a Temporary Job If you quit a temporary job without a just cause, you will generally not be eligible to resume benefits. If you complete the term of your temporary work, you will often be able to resume unemployment benefits as long as your benefit period hasnt expired. Accepting Suitable Employment Some states have suitable work requirements, which require unemployed workers to accept a position which is considered suitable. What is considered suitable employment varies from state to state, so check with your state unemployment office before turning down a job offer even if its for a temporary or contract job rather than a permanent position. In general, suitable work is determined by compensation, working conditions, health and ability, required skills, and commuting distance.
